[Decor] Reading Nook

A reading nook is a perfect place to curl up with a good book. In this generation of tablets, computers and smartphones, it's nice to have a quiet corner or a cozy secret hide out for some rest and relaxation. Adding a cozy and well-lit reading spot will set a peaceful and old world tone into your room or home.

So here's a round up of the 5 essentials you will need to start setting-up your own dream reading space:

1. Chair

It must be soft and overstuffed yet still comfortable for endless hours of reading pleasure.

2. Light

Make sure the light bulb of the lamp's reader-friendly and adjustable so you can prop it up on the side table and adjust its focus according to your liking.

3. Table

Get a big and sturdy table to put beside your chair to hold the lamp, books and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate partnered with cookies. Wink.

4. BookShelf

Nothing beats a wooden bookshelf to hold all the books in queue and to showcase your fantastic book collection.

5. Footstool

A wonderful way to comfortably rest your feet while reading. It can also provide extra seating when you have company such as a reading buddy.

Once you're finished, it's time to make hot chocolate, get a cookie, curl up with a good book and wish for fine cold weather.

[Decor] Beach House Themed Room

Our summer-inspired decor post is for the beach babe living in the city, who always long for the calming and healing power of the beach. Decorate your bedroom with a beach house theme so you can be transported to the shore every single day no matter how near or far the ocean is!

A beach-inspired room is a casual yet zen-like design that is equal parts airy and comfortable. Using ocean and natural surroundings as inspiration, I've rounded up the essentials on how to turn your urban bedroom into your very own private beach sanctuary.

1. Paint
To start off, pick a fresh color that is reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea such as seafoam green or soft turquoise.

2. White-Washed Furniture
The aim is to incorporate furniture which appears to have aged naturally after being outside in the salty sea air. Consider this for the bedside table, photo frames, door or even your closet.

3. Beddings
Neutral-colored sheets and blankets with beach prints like corals and starfish are perfect.

4. Throw Pillows
Accent the bed with boldly-colored throw pillows with turtle, coral and starfish designs.

5. Fishnet with Starfish and Seashells
Hang it over the headboard like a canopy and adorn with seashells and cork for a perfect nautical display.

6. Rug
Choose a color that reflects the colors of natural sand along the seashore.

7. Linen Curtains
Make your beach room bright by hanging sheer linen curtains from bamboo rods to let in natural light.

8. Candle
Scented candles with marine notes of salty sea air combined with a whisper of wild beach grass and sand dunes, with the slightest scent of gentle sea foam as it reaches the shore will evoke the soft summer scent of a morning stroll along the beach.

9. Ocean-Themed Knick-Knacks
Display a miniature lighthouse on a shelf or better yet, hang a ship captain's hat behind your door.

10. Potted Palm Tree
Doesn't matter if you get a real one or a low-maintenance artificial tree, either way this'll give your room an instant tropical feel.

11. Bedside Table Lamp
Complete the whole beach house scene with a wicker night light.

[DIY] Necklace Holder

Women have so much to organize! Ever have that dreaded jewelry box situation? You know, the kind when everything is all tangled up and then later on you rediscover necklaces you already forgot you had? Fear not, for I have stumbled upon this great DIY project that'll help solve those problems in a beautifully decorative way.

Materials:
  • Flat board
  • Assorted door knobs
  • Saw-tooth hangers
  • Hand drill

Directions:

1. First off, you need a flat board to attach the door knobs onto. This can be barn wood or driftwood, its edges need not be even or just buy a piece from a home improvement store and distress it a bit, you can even have it painted. You can collect an eclectic mix of new or old door knobs from antique shops or flea markets.

2. Measure the spaces where you want the door knobs, mark them with a pen and then drill the holes for the knobs using a hand drill.

3. Screw the door knobs onto the board via the already drilled holes then attach saw-tooth hangers at the back.

4. Hang onto a wall and fill the knobs with your necklaces or even scarves. And voila!

Now that you have your own digs, go from paper plates to porcelain. Although bright, these orange plates can be used for casual dinners or fancied up for entertaining guests.

2. Bath Linens

Those beach towels may have worked well through college, but it's time to add a little luxury with actual bath linens. Just don't forget to have a spare set handy for guests or those days you don't want to do laundry.

3. Framed Art

For your first place, you're allowed to showcase your college posters — just frame them first! Adding a frame will instantly upgrade your favorite art and add visual interest to your new "adult" walls.

4. Bedding Fit For a Queen

Now that those long, lean, and awkward dorm beds are a thing of the past, celebrate with new bedding. Go all out with a fun pattern that welcomes a variety of throw pillows to mix and match.

5. Versatile Curtains

No need to settle on unflattering vinyl curtains! For your first place, pick a curtain with a fun pattern but in a neutral color. This way, they can easily blend with your decor and newly acquired pieces.

6. Extra Seating

Poufs are perfect for apartments because of their versatility. They can be used as an ottoman, a coffee table (with the addition of a tray), or extra seating.

7. Barware

Time to ditch the red cups . . . for good! Every girl's apartment needs a set of barware. Wineglasses are a good place to start; you can slowly build from there.

8. The "Everything" Tray

A simple tray has so many uses: side table, minibar, or nightstand. Since they are rather small in size, they are a versatile first-apartment piece.

Finally, you can accent your first place with your own personal touches — not your roommate's. From sentimental pieces to quirky accents, allow your decor to showcase your personality!
